Why is Preventative Dental Care Important?

Preventive dental care is crucial for maintaining good oral health and preventing various dental issues. Here are some reasons why it’s important:

Regular preventive care and professional cleanings with our hygienist in the office help prevent common dental problems like cavities, gum disease and tooth decay. Regular checkups with Dr. Vance and your hygienist will allow them to address issues early and avoid more extensive and expensive treatments down the line. Dr. Vance is also able to offer procedures like fluorides, tooth sealants and mouth guards that can guard against tooth decay and wear and prevent cavities in the first place.

Preventive dental care is often more cost-effective than treating advanced dental problems. Routine checkups and cleanings can catch issues before they become serious, reducing the need for complex and costly procedures.

Good oral health is linked to overall well-being. Poor oral hygiene has been found to contribute to various health issues, including heart disease, diabetes and respiratory infections.

Our comprehensive dental exam checks for many things in addition to the health of your teeth. Dr. Vance will take X-rays to look for any infection or tooth decay and check your gums and soft tissues for periodontal disease. He will conduct a head and neck screening for any problems such as TMJ or oral cancers. In fact, many health problems have oral symptoms that can be detected in a preventative exam.

Early detection allows for prompt treatment and a better chance of successful outcomes. At Zac Vance Dentistry, we take preventive care seriously because it helps keep your mouth and body healthy.

Regular dental visits for preventive care and proper oral hygiene practices can help preserve your natural teeth for longer. We always want to help our patients maintain and keep their teeth. Losing teeth can impact your ability to chew and speak and can affect your self-confidence. Preventive care can also help maintain a bright smile by preventing stains, decay, and gum disease. Regular cleanings with your hygienist at Zac Vance Dentistry can remove surface stains and prevent discoloration to keep your smile white and bright.

Poor oral hygiene can lead to bad breath (halitosis). Regular brushing, flossing and professional cleanings can help prevent this embarrassing issue. In addition, Dr. Vance can help identify other underlying causes that may be contributing to halitosis and suggest better, more effective remedies.

Regular dental visits and oral hygiene education Dr. Vance and his team help reinforce good habits in brushing and flossing. Our team is always available to educate patients and suggest options to help in improving oral hygiene. These habits are essential for long-term oral health. As your trusted dental health partner, Dr. Vance is dedicated to teaching and helping his patients in their own personal oral health.

Oral health is closely connected to overall health. Maintaining good oral hygiene can positively impact your quality of life, self-esteem and social interactions.

By taking care of your oral health, you’re contributing to your overall longevity. Dental issues can escalate and impact your overall health if left untreated.

Incorporating preventive dental care practices, such as regular brushing, flossing, a balanced diet, and routine dental checkups, into your daily routine can significantly improve your oral health and overall well-being. Here at Zac Vance Dentistry, we are proud to offer high-quality dentistry in a welcoming environment. We want to be your trusted dental provider.

What to Expect During a Preventative Dental Care Appointment

Here at Zac Vance Dentistry, our team is well-trained to conduct a thorough exam, cleaning and polishing of your teeth during a preventive care appointment. Dr. Vance will be happy to answer any questions about your dental needs and discuss treatments.

Your teeth will be cleaned by your hygienist to remove any build up of plaque that can cause cavities or gum disease. You may have X-rays to examine the jaw and roots of your teeth for any infection. We will check your gum health for any signs of periodontal disease as well as an examination of your neck and lymph nodes for signs of oral cancers. Finally, your hygienist will polish your teeth and offer fluoride to keep them strong. Additionally, if you have any concerns about your smile or questions about cosmetic procedures, we are happy to address and answer those questions, as well.

How to Care for Your Teeth & Gums

In between preventive dental care appointments, there are many things you can do to care for your teeth and gums. Here are Zac Vance Dentistry, we recommend the following:

Brushing your teeth twice a day helps remove and prevent a build up of plaque on your teeth. We recommend a soft toothbrush and brushing in small circles on the teeth and gums in all four quadrants of the mouth. Be careful not to brush too hard, and be sure to hit those hard-to-reach back teeth. For even better results, we recommend an electric toothbrush for the most effective brushing.

We recommend floss that contains wax to go between the teeth easily. Another option is to use a flossing tool to make it easier to hold and use the floss. Flossing removes food and plaque from between the teeth and under the gums. When flossing, use the “C-shape” method—gently work the floss in between the teeth and under the gumline, move the floss up and down three times, and repeat on the other side of the tooth.

Your toothbrush will become less effective over time as the bristles wear out. As soon as it starts to fray, throw it away!

Drinking sugary beverages, especially soft drinks, can weaken your tooth enamel and cause more plaque. Acidic foods can also wear away enamel. Drinking water is good for your teeth and is preferred over juices and sugary drinks.

Remember to schedule your cleanings regularly at Zac Vance Dentistry. Keeping your teeth clean and healthy is a partnership, and we are here to provide for your dental health through regular cleanings and exams.
